Do you know that the planet that we live in is slowly dying? Do you know that maybe one day we will not have a place to live in anymore? Well, one cause of this is because of ecological degradation. Ecological degradation is the deterioration of the environment through depletion of resources such as air, water and soil; the destruction of ecosystems and the extinction of wildlife. We humans, are doing different activities that contribute to ecological degradation and if we continue doing this, more animals will become endangered, our resources will get more polluted and less people will survive. You can help save the environment and lessen ecological degradation in your own little way. Here are 3 ways to help stop ecological degradation:
1. Conserve Water
Conserving water not only extends our water resources for use by future generations, it protects the animals and plants that live in areas with limited water availability. Easy ways to conserve water include installing low-flow fixtures in bathrooms and kitchens, planting a native garden instead of a lawn in your yard, taking short showers and fixing leaks immediately.
2. Clear the Air
3. Reduce Waste
Reducing waste in combination with recycling can reduce methane emissions, save energy and increase forest carbon sequestration. Waste reduction actions include reusing and buying used or recycled
items, choosing items in less packaging and purchasing fewer items that
could end up in a landfill.
Those are some of the ways you can reduce ecological degradation to help make mother earth cleaner. Since our planet is slowly dying, some animals are slowly becoming endangered too. These animals are becoming or are already endangered because they have less shelter to live in, less food to eat and because of global warming. There are a lot more reasons why animals are becoming endangered. Aside from animals, plants are also becoming endangered. This is because we cut down a lot of trees to build shelter and we also do not take care of them properly. Examples of plants and animals that are becoming extinct in the Philippines are the following:
ANIMALS: PLANTS:
- Philippine Eagle Waling-Waling
- Philippine Spotted Deer Almaciga
- Philippine Freshwater Crocodile Jade Vine
- Tamaraw Rafflesia
- Philippine Tarsier Kris Plant
